It’s All About Love

Come February, and the world is once again accorded the opportunity to profess love—a tradition that can be traced back to an emotional English poet, Geoffrey Chaucer, in the 14th century. He believed that love deserved at least one special day of affirmation, and thus, Valentine’s Day was associated with an obscure priest named Saint Valentine. By the High Middle Ages, it had transformed into a celebration of courtly love, with lovers expressing their devotion through flowers, confectionery, and handwritten notes.

भारत (India), a land known for embracing diverse traditions and festivals, has also seen a growing celebration of Valentine’s Day.

While love has always been celebrated in myriad forms across our cultural and literary heritage, modern expressions of it—sometimes associated with Western influences—are met with a mix of acceptance and adaptation. At its core, however, love transcends boundaries, making it a sentiment that resonates universally.

हिन्दू धर्म (Hinduism), one of the oldest and most inclusive spiritual traditions, has always placed love at the heart of its teachings. The concept of  प्रेम (Prema) meaning divine love, is deeply embedded in the Vedic scriptures, exemplified through timeless epics like the रामायण (Ramayana), where राम (Rama) and सीता (Sita)’s devotion symbolizes unwavering love and duty, and the महाभारत (Mahabharata), where in राधा (Radha) and कृष्ण (Krishna)’s relationship embodies the transcendental and selfless love that connects the soul to the divine. The ‘भक्ति (Bhakti) movement’ further reinforced love as the ultimate spiritual path, encouraging devotees to express their love for the divine through poetry, music, and dance.

If there is anything truly worth celebrating, it is love! Love is the most potent emotion, the force that has kept the world on an even keel. It is the condition in which the happiness of another person becomes essential to our own.

The Evolution of Love & Expression
We all pledge love and commitment to that special someone at various points in our lives. But as the years go by, the demands of everyday life often push expressions of love to the background.

That is why occasions like Valentine’s Day serve as gentle reminders to rekindle the spark, reflect on our blessings, and reinforce our bonds. It is an opportunity to look back on how love has grown, matured, and mellowed over time, and to reaffirm our promise to nurture it further.

Each of us has a unique way of expressing love—some in a reserved, straight-jacketed manner, while others choose imaginative or innovative ways to surprise their partners. Love stories have always inspired us, from the poetic tragedies of  हीर-रांझा (Heer-Ranjha) and Romeo-Juliet to the pages of Mills & Boon novels and the larger-than-life portrayals in Bollywood, Hollywood.

The Quantum Synchronicity of Love
Love often finds us in the most unexpected ways, aligning itself with the principles of quantum synchronicity. Just as particles at opposite ends of the universe can remain inexplicably connected, love too transcends physical limitations. It operates beyond logic, weaving itself into the fabric of time, space, and serendipity. This phenomenon, often described as आत्माओं का युग्मन (Quantum Entanglement of the Soul)’, suggests that love is less about searching and more about resonance. When two people vibrate on the same frequency, love naturally finds its way.

As highlighted in a thought-provoking podcast, love is not just an emotion; it is an energy field that exists within and around us, guiding us toward the connections we are meant to experience. Love doesn’t adhere to timelines or societal constructs—it emerges when the universe aligns our hearts with those who are meant to journey with us.

Love Beyond a Single Day
And yet, love does not begin and end on February 14th. On the 16th, and on every day that follows, we are presented with opportunities to give flight to our imagination, to express love in ways we never have before. A well-thought-out gesture, a handwritten note, or simply an extra moment of attention can rekindle warmth and intimacy. For those seeking inspiration, borrowing from the poets, playwrights, and lyricists of history is always an option—after all, the best love stories are often built on echoes of timeless sentiments.

As the movie ‘The Mirror Has Two Faces’ puts it so beautifully:

“Because that experience shall make us feel completely alive, where every sense shall be heightened, and every emotion magnified. Our everyday reality shattered, and we find ourselves flying into the heavens. It may only last a moment, an hour, or an afternoon, but that doesn’t diminish its value, because we are left with memories that we treasure for the rest of our lives.”

So, this Valentine’s Day, let us celebrate love in all its forms—the love for a partner, a friend, a child, a parent, or even for life itself. Let’s embrace love not just as a feeling but as a practice of presence.

Because in the end, life isn’t about how many declarations we make; it’s about how deeply we live and love in the moment. For love is, and will always be, the truest celebration of our humanity.
